I created this short film inspired by the John Cage music, The Seasons. I used laser prints and the continuous tone light from a scanner to animate the film. I am particularly interested in the spaces that John Cage left between the notes in  The Seasons, and it was these spaces I tried to capture.

The Loyalty Affirmation project was created to explore how people react to both overt and subtle control by totalitarian authority. It was an event to explore the choices people make when faced with difficult moral dilemmas and how their choices can expose what makes up a persons inner core or moral code. The test measured how people react when confronted with a moral problem, how much (or little) responsibility someone would take for their actions, and what would those actions involve. Additionally, would the test convince the person to alter their actions in positive manner? 

The  test was given to sixteen friends in a party atmosphere.  When the participants arrived they were photographed and the photo was then stapled to the cover of a test booklet to simulate an identification document. The booklet was named, Loyalty Affirmation, and had a decidedly sinister, authoritarian air. The participants were then asked to listen to music I specifically composed to influence the answers. On the front of the booklet they were directed to fill in sensitive personal information, such as social security number, address, phone number, and were clearly told that everything they write in the booklet will absolutely be made public. They were also told not to turn the pages of the booklet until told to do so. The first test question was, “On Friday my friend called. She is being followed and wants to hide at my house. I told her…” The participants were confronted with some difficult choices. Do they fill out the personal information or remain anonymous? How would they respond if they knew someone else was going to read the text and it be made public? At what risk to themselves would they help a friend? The participants created their own stories from the questions. They (hopefully) wove a narrative that revealed their core nature. For the final question the music was stopped and the participants were not given the prompt to turn the page. Was the test over? The participants were forced to make a decision, either follow the rules and wait for the prompt to turn the page or break the rules to finish the test. The dilemma in the room was palatable. When the test was over (as determined by the majority of the group) all the booklets were collected, leaving the participants slightly apprehensive. What will people think of what I wrote? What is going to happen? Will people hate me for what I said? All the booklets were collected and put in a specially made box. In essence, the participants collectively wrote a book.

     In the project Look Up, the goal was to create a piece that had a duel purpose. The first was to create awareness for a political prisoner or prisoners, and the second goal was to point out all the things in life that should be free to human beings that are all too often taken for granted. With this in mind, photos of the sky were taken every time I left my house over the period of a week. The dates and times were recorded for each photo. The photos were then organized in a book, one photo per page, with the width of the photos proportionally shrinking until there was only a sliver of sky left. Then the sliver disappeared, leaving only a blank page. The shrinking photos represent the closing of a door, or jail cell. On the inside back cover of the book is an envelope containing a card with the name of a political prisoner currently in detention. The card was purposefully put in the back of the book to follow the "closing door" sky photos, as if the prisoner was the only thing left in the empty cell. The entire book was sealed in a plastic bag and buried under dirt in a box. This makes the viewer work to uncover ugly truths that are usually ignored. The box is labeled with the coordinates of the city where the political prisoner was arrested. In this case a city in China.

      Creating the Look Up book was an interesting experience. The act of photographing the sky every time I went outside made me aware of how different the sky looks at different times of the day and according to the current weather conditions. I reflected on how little I actually observe the sky during my normal daily routine. Overall I thought the book was a success, albeit a bit heavy handed with the message. I would have liked to deliver the concept in a subtler manner, but I was unable to accomplish this and still maintain the message. The book is a metaphor for life. The exploration of the book forces people to get dirty and work to understand the outcome: the awareness of the plight of political prisoners. If the book makes even one person aware of an instance of injustice, then I consider it a goal achieved.

The project La Loteria comprised elements created to enhance the La Loteria fairy tale story written by Larry Goode. The story itself is a magical tale revolving around a small rural village in 1920’s Mexico and the teenage residents, Miguel and Maria. In the story, an evil wizard lives in a mountain cave, seducing Maria with an enchanted chicken dinner. Miguel, along with his father and Maria’s witch mother, Ivy, attempt to save Maria. The book itself is handmade, reflecting the rustic and organic quality of the village and has illustrations hidden under the text that the reader has to open to view. The door-like opening in the text is important, symbolizing the magic door that leads to the wizard’s realm. The book is contained in a red wooden box. The red symbolized the sensual love story between Maria and Miguel and the many violent events in the narrative. At one end of the box is a hole enabling the viewer to see staggered illustrations representing a tunnel or hallway as in the story. The bottom of the box is lined with black rocks to represent the cave floor and the box is covered with a bundle of black sticks to represent the wooden door leading to the wizard’s house and the overall organic feel of the story.
